Fifth-graders at Southminster School are
participating in a paper recycling program.
Southminster School is Going Green - The fifth-grade class at Southminster School has started a year-long paper recycling program with the help of parent volunteer Patty Godfrey.  To kick off the project, students ordered and assembled recycling boxes for every classroom and office in the school and church. Each student  prepared a speech about the importance of recycling and shared their thinking with the entire school and staff as they distributed the boxes.
Each week the boxes are emptied by the fifth- grade students and the paper is hauled to a recycling center by a parent volunteer. The fifth-graders will fulfill a part of their service hour requirements through their participation in this project.

Brandon Walquist
Brandon Walquist Earns Eagle Scout Rank - Brandon Walquist from Boy Scout Troop 1656 earned the Eagle Scout rank.
Brandon began his scouting career in Cub Scouts in 2001, when he joined Pack 1680. After his Arrow of Light ceremony he crossed over and joined Boy Scout Troop 1656 in 2004. He has held several positions of leadership including patrol leader, librarian and troop guide. As a Scout, Brandon earned 30 merit badges and achieved Order of the Arrow.
His Eagle leadership project consisted of planting six trees to help beautify his church Joy Lutheran. Over the past several years, some of the larger trees on the property had to be removed due to age and disease. Last year, Hurricane Ike blew over two of the largest pecan trees remaining on the property. Brandon completed his project, totaling 155 hours of service, with the help of 15 scouts from his troop and seven adults.
In addition to digging the holes and planting the trees, they installed an irrigation system to help the trees get through the first couple of years of the hot and dry Texas summers.
