Fort Bend Lifestyles & Homes November 2009
<<BACK
One of the county’s greatest biking events—Bike the Bend for Literacy—is set for Sunday, Nov. 22. Whether you are an avid cycler or simply enjoy the exercise and local scenery, there is something for everyone at this fun event. Bike the Bend, presented for the fourth year in a row by Richmond Bone & Joint Clinic, provides a wonderful opportunity to get a workout, spend time with  family and benefit literacy efforts in the community.
Bike the Bend is a BP MS 150 recommended ride benefiting the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County and begins at 8 a.m., starting and finishing at Foster High School, 4400 FM 723 in Richmond.
Riders have enjoyed the ride for the past few years, which is strategically scheduled the weekend before Thanksgiving. With its scenic routes and first rate rest stops, riders will find delicious fruit and snacks from Whole Foods Market Sugar Land, a second time sponsor, as well as a variety of cold beverages to fuel the ride. As in the past few years, Pei Wei Asian Diner will be on-site after the ride with lettuce wraps to top off a wonderful day.
Cyclists of all levels are invited to participate by choosing the route to suit their time and ability. Bike the Bend 2009 will feature three routes of 19, 32, and 59 miles.
Register at www.active.com or at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Event-day registration and packet pick up will begin at 7 a.m., with only cash and checks accepted. More than 600 cyclists registered for last year ’s event. Registration at the event is $40 per rider.
All proceeds will support the life-changing work of the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County, whose mission is to end inter-generational cycles of illiteracy and generate community-wide literacy awareness. Riders, sponsors and volunteers participating in Bike the Bend for Literacy help to unlock the potential for determined adults who want to pass a legacy of literacy (proficiency in reading, writing and understanding the written English language) to their children.
