Houston’s upper Kirby is home to Kuhl-Linscomb, a unique retailer that many local and national design and lifestyle experts consider to be one of the country ’s premier all-in-one-emporiums. Enter Kuhl-Linscomb with great expectation: expect a visual feast —you won’t believe your eyes; expect inspiration—you’ll leave with ideas galore; expect satisfaction—you’ll find what you’re looking for; and mostly, expect the unexpected—you’ll discover things you never expected.
Kuhl-Linscomb is the brainchild of Pam Kuhl-Linscomb and Dan Linscomb, a husband and wife team who worked diligently to realize their idea of a unique design and lifestyle store and define it from the more corporate cookie cutter versions. Success was imminent for these two, both having achieved a great deal prior to their marriage and this joint venture. Pam worked her way through high school and college in the fashion and retail industry before graduating with a degree in design. With the onset of her professional career, Pam Kuhl-Linscomb, ASID, established an award-winning design firm and was named by House & Garden magazine as one of “the best designers working today.”
Dan began modestly as well. At a young age, he worked for his family’s general store in south Louisiana, a job he held through high school. Dan worked his way through college by selling cookware door to door; then through law school by selling life insurance, where he was consistently a top 10 college agent. He founded Linscomb & Associates, which became Linscomb & Williams (a fee-based financial planning and wealth management firm) where he still works full time.
Kuhl-Linscomb as a retail entity has just as interesting a history as its founders. Originally, the store was simply a couple of booths in an antique flea market. In Pam ’s design work, she accumulated a lot of antiques, so the space at the flea market gave her an outlet for the overflow. Due to Pam ’s stellar reputation in design and good taste, two booths quickly grew to three, then four, until eventually Kuhl-Linscomb took over the entire space. Before, filling the few booths with antiques and one-of-a-kind pieces had been the focus. Now, with the entire space, how to expand the inventory became more challenging. During their marketing trips, Pam and Dan encountered a plethora of beautiful and unique lifestyle products, but never had they seen all of them in one place. Fusing design, accessories, beauty, home and furniture products and selling them under one roof now became their passion.
Lifestyle stores (think Crate & Barrel or Pottery Barn) were beginning to enjoy wide public acceptance, so Pam and Dan set out to broaden and uplift that successful business model. They invested their personal funds and set out to grow their store by convincing world-class high-end product vendors to sell to an unknown store with no national clientele. Through phone calls, strategic planning, perseverance and in their words, “God’s hand,” Pam and Dan initiated business with each of these vendors, and eventually moved out of the Houston Decorative Center and acquired their own real estate —five buildings in one of Houston’s finest locations. Visitors to this unique store campus are blown away with the variety and quality of products offered.
