literacy council
training dates
Tutor training dates for the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County are scheduled for Nov. 2 and Nov. 4 from 6 p.m.-9 p.m.,  and Nov. 7 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Literacy Center, 12530 Emily Court in Sugar Land.  
LCFBC volunteer tutors teach adult basic literacy and/or English as a Second Language. Students will benefit from the individualized attention while tutors will enjoy the rewards of helping improve adult literacy. Literacy tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. The most important requirement is that volunteers be committed to helping adults change their lives by improving their ability to read, comprehend and speak the English language.
Tutor-training workshops are held every other month and attendance at all scheduled days of training is required in order to become a certified tutor.

holiday treasures boutique
The Sugar Creek Country Club Women’s Association continues its tradition of sponsoring the annual boutique, Holiday Treasures, on Nov. 5 at Sugar Creek Country Club from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Shoppers will be able to choose from a variety of items from 40 vendors including jewelry, children ’s toys, clothing, handbags, food, specialty gift items, home decorator selections and holiday decorations. Admission is $5.

Fort Bend Friends and Neighbors will host a “Fall Fest with Friends”  at the Hilton Garden Inn on Hwy. 6 in Sugar Land, Thursday, Nov. 5, at 9:30 a.m. Come and browse through lovely gifts for birthdays, Christmas or yourself and join in the silent auction. There will also be an “elaborate brunch” to enjoy. All proceeds will go to the FBFN Scholarship Fund. The scholarships are presented to Fort Bend County students at the spring luncheon. Tickets are $25 for members and $30 for guests.

tri-city women’s club meeting,

free flu shots/toy drive
Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, in collaboration with Fort Bend and Sugar Land Exchange Club and Sugar Land Rotary, will provide free flu shots on Saturday, Nov. 14, to community members who participate in Santa ’s Gift Exchange.
Fort Bend residents can bring a new, unwrapped toy or clothing item to Methodist Sugar Land Hospital from 8 a.m. to noon in exchange for a flu shot. The toys and clothing will benefit local children in the Fort Bend area.
Methodist Sugar Land Hospital will be distributing a limited supply of the seasonal influenza vaccine to persons age 18 and over with no history of egg and/or latex allergy.

The Taste of Sugar Land
Members of the all volunteer Taste of Sugar Land Committee are “stirring the pot” and preparing for the 7th Annual Taste of Sugar Land on Nov. 15 at the Sugar Land Marriott Town Square.
First Presbyterian Church of Sugar Land, East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry and Fort Bend Family Promise have joined together in again presenting this popular local event that benefits less fortunate Fort Bend neighbors who are in temporary crisis. Enjoy more than 20 of the best local restaurants who are participating and a holiday auction.

Job Search tips at fort bend county libraries, Nov. 2, 9, 16
Fort Bend County Libraries’ Sugar Land Branch Library, 550 Eldridge, will present a free, three-part series of “Job-Search Survival Tips,” on Nov. 2, Nov. 9 and Nov. 16 from 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. in the Meeting Room of the library.
In the series, a team of 10 professionals, with decades of experience in corporate America between them, will share their insight and the experiences they themselves have had in the business world. Topics include interviewing, r ésumés and networking. The sessions are free and open to the public. Registration is not required.

St. Laurence School 15th Annual Golf Tournament, nov. 2
The St. Laurence Catholic School 15th annual golf tournament will take place on Monday, Nov. 2, at Sweetwater Country Club. Golfers of all levels are invited to join together for a day of fun and fellowship, which includes 18 holes of golf, fun games, food and beverage tents on the course, banquet dinner and prizes. All proceeds from the tournament go directly to benefit the tuition assistance fund for qualifying children enrolled at the school.

Troop 1424 garage sale, Nov. 7
Boy Scout Troop 1424’s garage sale is scheduled for Nov. 7 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. in the parking lot at Colony Creek Community Church, 7555 Hwy. 6 South next to Candelari ’s.

Farmers’ Market, every sunday
Is there anything better than an organic homegrown tomato? The farmers bring jellies, watermelon, blueberries and strawberries, olive oils, fresh tomatoes, potatoes, corn, okra, breads even whiskey bread to Wild West World. They offer produce that is growing in this area. The farmers educate their customers about the produce and products they are purchasing and how it is different than what is purchased at the supermarket. You can even start your own garden with the Herb Cottages organic pieces from the WWW garden every Sunday from noon-4 p.m. Wild West World is located on FM 359 in Richmond. Prairie Heritage Day at
Brazos Bend State Park, nov. 7
The Coastal Prairie Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist Program will present Prairie Heritage Day in cooperation with Brazos Bend State Park on Saturday, Nov. 7. This fun-filled, family-oriented event, free with park admission, will engage children and adults alike, while informing about the wonders of the area ’s native prairies.  
Educational sessions will occur throughout the day, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., covering the prairie ’s past, the prairie’s future, benefits of native plants, native bees, raptors, snakes, the endangered Attwater Prairie Chicken, and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department ’s Texas Watch Programs. Concurrently, there will be opportunities to assist in a pocket prairie planting and take hikes guided by local experts to learn about Brazos Bend State Park ’s ecosystems. Exhibitors from a variety of nature organizations will be on hand with activities, demonstrations and wildlife.

GREATER HOUSTON ROWING CLUB launches NEW BOATHOUSE, nov. 7
The Greater Houston Rowing Club in partnership with Planned Community Developers and the First Colony Community Association will celebrate the grand opening of its new boathouse on Nov. 7 in Lake Pointe Town Center, where the GHRC has been actively rowing since 1988.
The event will take place at 10 a.m. along Oyster Creek at 15910 Creekbend Drive near the dam. The community is invited to enjoy refreshments and tour the new boat house. Garage Sale, nov. 7
For all the budget-conscious shoppers in Missouri City, here is a bargain for you! Missouri City ’s sixth annual community-wide garage sale will take place on Saturday, Nov. 7, at the City Hall Complex, 1522 Texas Parkway. Approximately 100 booths will be stocked with all types of items for the bargain-hunting crowd. The sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. No entrance fee is required.  
“Clothes, furniture, decorative fixtures, appliances, computers, afghans, handmade jewelry, toys, arts and crafts, along with many other items can be found at this year's sale, ” says Jennifer Milam, recreation specialist. “A large crowd is expected, so come early to get the best bargains.”
