Stress and Heartburn
Leka Gajula, M.D. - Gastroenterology
From butterflies in your stomach before a presentation to an ulcer that acts up whenever things get tough, gastrointestinal health seems to be secretly connected to our emotions. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) or acid reflux is no exception, and heartburn symptoms can seem to escalate right along with office workload.
However, the relationship between stress and heartburn is a tricky one; just as one woman's stress is another's adrenalin rush, stress may sock in the gut some —but not all—people who have GERD.
Although stress may exacerbate GERD symptoms, it's unlikely to be the underlying cause of  chronic heartburn. In the past, stress was thought to be the culprit behind a variety of gastrointestinal problems, including ulcers and inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease. Now it's known that bacterial infections (in the case of ulcers) and underlying inflammation (in bowel diseases) or even cancers are to blame, not stress.  It very important to rule out serious causes with a simple procedure called EGD.
If you suffer from GERD be extra careful to avoid known heartburn triggers such as chocolate, citrus fruits and juices, tomatoes and tomato sauces, spicy or fatty foods, full-fat dairy products, and peppermint.  Also, try to make mealtime as relaxing as possible, perhaps by playing some soothing music. Eating smaller meals also helps. Don't lie down too soon after eating, and try to sleep with your head raised. The good news is that there are also many types of medications to help combat heartburn if none of these methods helps you feel better.

Spinal Fusion—An Option
to Decrease Back Pain
Methodist Orthopaedic Specialists of Texas
Do you have pain in your back? Have you tried weight loss, smoking cessation, steroid injections, traction and physical therapy without significant results? If the answer is yes, spinal fusion may be an option to consider. “Most cases of back pain usually improve with nonsurgical treatments,” says Dr. Rajesh Bindal, board-certified neurosurgeon on staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “However, there are circumstances where fusion may be the best recommendation for decreasing a patient ’s back pain.”
A fusion is a surgical procedure that links or fuses vertebral bones on either side of a diseased or damaged disc and can be performed using minimally invasive techniques. The alignment and stability created will eliminate motion across the damaged level, decreasing irritation to the nerves and thus decreasing pain felt in your back and down into the lower extremities.
To learn more about spinal fusion and whether the procedure is right for you, please come to a free seminar given by Dr. Rajesh Bindal and his new associate, Dr. John Park, on  Oct. 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. located in conference rooms ABCD. Seating is limited. Please call 281-274-7500 to register. For more information on Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, visit www.MethodistSugarLand.com.

Tingling Hands &
Burning Feet
A.Y. Shukla, M.D.
Are you one of thousands of Americans who suffer from a disease condition referred to as peripheral neuropathy? Peripheral neuropathy is a disorder of the peripheral nerves characterized by tingling or burning sensation, weakness, muscle aches or cramps, difficulties with balance, and at times autonomic nervous system involvement characterized by dizziness, sexual dysfunction, or change of blood pressure especially in upright position. Peripheral neuropathies have generally a gradual onset and slow progression. A typical de- scription of the tingling and numbness is in a “glove and stocking” fashion that is mainly in the lower legs and distal aspects of the upper extremities. Tingling sensation or burning pain are very common symptoms with peripheral neuropathy predominantly due to involvement of the sensory nerves, however, in the advanced cases, motor nerves are also involved where weakness and gait difficulties can also be predominant the clinical presentation.
In many cases, a strong family history is noteworthy; however many other cases may not have any underlying cause contributing to the disease. It is important to have a formal neurological evaluation and a careful search for correctable causes as for example diabetes mellitus, renal failure, disorder of thyroid glands, exposure to drugs and toxins, or heavy metals like arsenic, lead, mercury, or thallium, industrial solvents or pesticides, vitamin deficiencies, or any underlying malignancies or tumors which can also be associated with peripheral neuropathy.
Dr. Shukla is a board certified neurologist practicing in Sugar Land and Richmond, also fellowship trained for neuromuscular disorders and is available at 281-565-8005 should you have any questions.

Shoulder Pain
Steven E. Nolan, M.D.
Does nagging shoulder pain affect your golf or tennis game? Does it ache when you are working out or keep you awake at night? More than likely, it is not going to go away on its own and trying to “push through” the pain may even worsen the situation.
Shoulder pain can result from injuries or overuse. Rotator cuff injuries are very common and start to occur and increase in the fourth and fifth decades of life. Many people will lose their range of motion due to these injuries.
The best way to take care of shoulder pain is to see a board certified orthopedic surgeon. A physical exam followed by an MRI is the most accurate way to diagnose the problem. Treatment plans will vary but may include medications, injections, physical therapy and possibly surgery. The advances in arthroscopic surgery are amazing and not only will alleviate the problem but will allow for a quick recovery and return to favorite sports and activities.
Dr. Steven E. Nolan is a fellowship trained, board certified orthopedic surgeon with the Fondren Orthopedic group and is highly skilled in arthroscopic surgery.
