Fort Bend Baptist Academy broke ground on March 29 on a $2.9 million, 12,000-square-foot field house to be built adjacent to the current
baseball complex on Seventh Street at Eldridge in Sugar Land. The field house
will have a 2,300-square-foot weight room, home and visitor locker rooms,
trainer room and coaches
’ offices. Also being constructed are a new track, football field and bleachers. Site work began March 30, with track and stadium
completion slated for August 2009, and the field house completion for
late-September.
Athletic Director Bill Bufton says, “The field house, track and stadium are much needed additions to our athletic
complex. We are looking forward to the first game on the new football field in
September as new Head Varsity Football Coach
Bruce Lane leads the Eagles.”
The University of Houston System at Sugar Land opened a new $37 million academic building, significantly expanding the higher
education resources for the Fort Bend region.
“Sugar Land is one of the fastest-growing areas in the entire country so we’re delighted to be able to provide this important facility to support the
community
’s ambitious educational objectives,” said Renu Khator, chancellor of the UH System and UH president. Khator joined a number of area
dignitaries attending the dedication ceremony.
The 145,000-square-foot building, which will be known as Brazos Hall, will be
shared by both UHSSL and Wharton County Junior College. It includes 44
classrooms, including five computer labs, along with nine science labs, 73
faculty offices, an exercise facility, bookstore and the WCJC enrollment
services office. A School of Nursing suite will be shared by both institutions.
The new construction also features a
two-level, 150-seat auditorium and large multi-purpose room. The new classrooms
will provide seating for approximately 2,500 additional students.
“Brazos Hall will allow Fort Bend-area students to fulfill virtually all their lower- and upper-level educational needs at a single campus should they
wish to,
” Khator said.
The UH System at Sugar Land teaching center was created in 1995. In 2002, UH
System at Sugar Land moved into the Albert and Mamie George Building, made
possible through the vision and generosity of the City of Sugar Land, the
George Foundation, the Texas Department of Transportation and many corporate
and individual donors.
Texana Center received an audit of its Developmental Disabilities Authority Services by the
Department of Aging
& Disability Services Authority Services. At the conclusion of the audit exit
conference, the audit team leader proclaimed that this was
“absolutely the best audit we have ever seen.”
DADS indicated the families interviewed were satisfied with their service
coordinators, seeing them as great advocates; they also confirmed that they
were very pleased with the services they received. DADS indicated that Texana
’s service plans were respectful, strength-based and individualized, focusing on
clients
’ abilities. The report highlighted the fact that there were absolutely no errors
in the encounter data, which is almost unheard of. Community living options
process, staff training and record keeping was excellent.
