Fireworks on the Brazos
Celebrate this nation’s independence where Texas declared her independence—at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site. The “Birthplace of Texas” has a full day of fun activities planned for this Fourth of July, capped off by a tremendous fireworks display.
The site will be open from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Visitors can tour Barrington Living History Farm, Star of the Republic Museum, Independence Hall (regular admissions apply) and the top-notch Visitor ’s Center. Bring along a picnic lunch or enjoy a variety of foods and beverages from festival food vendors. Browse arts and crafts booths selling unique items.
When it gets dark, prepare for Fireworks-on-the-Brazos presented by H-E-B.

4-H Sew and So Camp,
beginning July 6
Texas AgriLife Extension Service of Fort Bend County will host 4-H Sew and So Camp  where youth will learn how to use the basic tools in sewing, make a tote bag, a pillow case, a fabric book cover, and accessories including a knitted scarf. 4-H membership is not required for participation in this day camp. Minimum age for participation is 10 years.
Participants are not required to have their own sewing machine, however, learning on your own machine is much better than using one you are not familiar with. The cost of the camp is $40. Registered participants will be given a supply list and will need to bring a sack lunch. The camp will be held at Texas AgriLife Extension Service office located at 1402 Band Road from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. July 6-10 for youth with some sewing experience and July 20-23 for youth with no sewing experience. Register as early as possible to hold a spot. Registration forms can be obtained at the Extension Office, 1402 Band Road, Rosenberg.

fish city grill fundraiser, July 7
Fish City Grill in Sugar Land Town Square will host a day-long fundraiser on Tuesday, July 7, to support the Fort Bend Regional Council on Substance Abuse. Fifteen percent of all sales will be donated in support of the council ’s drug-free youth programs. Exciting events and activities will occur throughout the day to raise awareness and money. Have a great time and wonderful food while supporting drug-free kids in the community.

fort bend La Leche League, meets monthly
Mothers wishing to find out more about breastfeeding are invited to attend a meeting of La Leche League of Fort Bend every second Monday at 7 p.m. at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital or every third Monday at 10:30 a.m. at River Park Community Center. La Leche League of Fort Bend is a breastfeeding support group for new and expectant mothers and also offers meetings and education.

Green Thumb Seminar: Pests - the good, the bad and the ugly, July 9
The Fort Bend Master Gardeners, sponsored by Texas AgriLife Extension Service, will present Pests - the good, the bad and the ugly as part of the Green Thumb Series on  July 9 from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. at the Bud O’Shieles Community Center, 1402 Band Road in Rosenberg.

HOUSTON UNDERCOVER - A QUILT SHOW, preview party
Quilt Guild of Greater Houston is sponsoring “Houston Undercover - A Quilt Show” at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, 11612 Memorial Dr., on July 24-25 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Admission is $5.
This is a judged quilt show with more than 200 quilts, various vendors, snack bar, door prizes, donation quilt, quilt appraisal and a children ’s scavenger hunt. Each child will get a prize for participating.
On July 23, the Auction & Preview Night will be held from 6 p.m.-8:30 p.m.

The Prince Is Giving a Ball for the entire kingdom and you’re invited to attend as award-winning Fort Bend Theatre presents Rogers and Hammerstein ’s Cinderella at the Stafford Centre on July 31, Aug. 1-2.

FBJSL Sustainers Host Membership Drive, aug. 11
The Fort Bend Junior Service League Sustainers will host a coffee for prospective members on Aug. 11 at 10 a.m. at the home of Laura Leatherwood. Ladies age 50 and older who are interested in learning more about Sustaining membership in the league are invited to attend.
FBJSL is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, to developing the potential of women and to improving the Fort Bend County community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. 35th annual festival of glass show and sale
The Houston Glass Club will hold its 35th annual Festival of Glass Show and Sale on Aug. 14-16 at the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds in Rosenberg. This three-day event will begin on Friday from 2 p.m.-7 p.m.
The annual event remains one of the leading shows in the nation for American-made glassware primarily from the 20th century. Glass makers including Heisey, Cambridge, Fostoria and others will be represented. Over 30 leading dealers from around the nation will be represented with some of the rarest of American-made glassware ever produced in the 20th century.
There is also a general line show with dealers who carry a wide range of general line antiques including furniture, silver, jewelry, quilts and other items.
Admission is $10 on Friday and is good all three days. Saturday and Sunday tickets are $6. Saturday show hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday. Parking is free and buildings are air conditioned.

Ninth Annual Back to School Scramble
Plan now to play in the ninth annual Fort Bend Education Foundation Back to School Scramble golf tournament set for Monday, Aug. 24, at Sweetwater Country Club.
Schlumberger and Sweetwater Country Club are presenting the “Back to School Scramble” chaired by Ron Bailey and Rod Nelson. Lunch will be provided by Chick-fil-A. Entry fee includes lunch, golf and cart, beverages, reception after the tournament and special gifts. Foursome teams are $1,000 and individual entries are $275.
Over $261,000 was awarded in grants to teachers and schools for the 2008-09 school year. Since the foundation ’s inception in 1992, the foundation has awarded over $2.5 million in grants to Fort Bend ISD teachers and schools to fund innovative teaching ideas.
The Education Foundation has partnered with the school district and created the “Grants for Experts” program. Fort Bend ISD teachers received the benefit of in-service training from nationally recognized education experts in such topics as classroom management, differentiated learning strategies and character development.
The Fort Bend Education Foundation has also implemented additional programs such as Angel Gifts, which provides teachers, just beginning their teaching career, a gift certificate to a local teachers ’ supply store to help set up their classrooms.
