ocal Fort Bend County business woman Laura K.S. Parnell received the Wound
Healing Society
’s Distinguished Service Award at the society’s annual meeting in Grapevine, Texas. Laura received the award for her service
in leading the membership committee and as a member of the board of directors.
The Distinguished Service Award is bestowed to individuals for outstanding
contributions to the growth and development of the society. The last
Distinguished Service award was presented in 2000.
During graduate school at Texas A&M University in 1990, Laura began researching wounds. She became a member of the
WHS in 1992. In 1998 she began serving on the membership committee and has
served
continuously since that time. In 2003, she was appointed the chair of the
membership committee. In 2006, she was elected by the membership to the WHS
board of directors for a 3-year term and was re-elected for a second term in
April 2009. For the past 11 years, Laura has worked to improve the WHS values
and opportunities to benefit the society and its members in order to better
serve its mission to advance the science and practice of wound healing. During
this time, the WHS membership has almost doubled and several new initiatives
and practices were introduced.
Laura K.S. Parnell is the president and founder of Precision Consulting. Founded
in 1998, the company specializes in wound healing and burn research; however,
projects in oncology, immunology and cardiology are not uncommon. Laura designs
research protocols, develops scientific niche products, provides scientific
knowledge and regulatory background, ensures adherence to current practices,
and prepares documents and manuscripts based on the needs and budget of her
clients. She has an international clientele and has worked extensively with
industry representatives, FDA and research investigators.
Expertise in immunology and microbiology, coupled with bench and clinical
research experiences, has lead to Laura
’s unique perspective in research. As a consultant, Laura draws upon her
experiences from industry and science to help bridge industrial research and
clinical needs for pharmaceutical drugs and medical device products.
Chronic wounds are often called a silent epidemic. In 2007, it was estimated
worldwide there were 7.4 million pressure ulcers, 11 million venous ulcers and
11.3 million diabetic ulcers requiring treatment. More information can be found
