he First Lady’s Family Literacy Initiative for Texas awarded a $50,000 grant to Lamar CISD’s Project LEARN.
Project L.E.A.R.N. (Let’s Eliminate At-Risk Needs) is Lamar CISD’s family literacy program. The program offers adult basic education, GED and
English as a Second Language for parents. Children receive homework assistance,
pre-kindergarten or kindergarten instruction, or developmental child care.
The funds will enrich family literacy services to at-risk LCISD children in
kindergarten through third grade and their parents. This grant will provide
additional materials for reading instruction and pre-reading activities,
supplementing the current program.
A program of the Barbara Bush Texas Fund for Family Literacy, the First Lady’s Family Literacy Initiative for Texas awards grants of up to $50,000 to public
and private nonprofit organizations that work within the family unit. Launched
at the Governor
’s Mansion in Austin in 1996 by Mrs. Laura Bush, the First Lady’s Family Literacy Initiative has awarded over $3 million to create or expand
family literacy programs.
