Chef Soren Pedersen to create menus for Sugar Plum Market. Fort Bend Junior Service League announced Executive Chef Soren Pedersen of Ray’s Grill as this year’s caterer for the 2009 FBJSL Sugar Plum Market presented by Methodist Sugar Land
Hospital.
“In planning the menus I took into account seasonal availability of organic
fruits and vegetables and certified natural meats while using the highest
quality of ingredients,
” said Chef Pedersen.

SUGAR CREEK GARDEN CLUB AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS. Sugar Creek Garden Club awarded scholarships to Aime Lillard and Andrew Cartmill. Each student received a check in the amount of $1,500 and are working toward
their PhD in the Dept. of Horticultural Sciences.

FBJSL PROMOTES PROVISIONALS. The Fort Bend Junior Service League recognized 46 women who completed the
requirements of Provisional membership and were promoted to Active status.
Among other prerequisites, each Provisional member was required to perform 54
hours of service on a community placement, volunteer her time at each FBJSL
event and participate in a service project benefiting an agency supported by
the league.

Dragon Boat Festival Stays Afloat in Sugar Land. Sugar Land’s last-minute sponsorship of the Texas Dragon Boat Festival ensured the event
remained afloat after heavy rains prevented the use of the original venue in
Houston. The festival offered live cultural performances, pan-Asian cuisine, a
Kid Zone, arts and crafts and dragon boat racing.
Also contributing to the event’s success were First Colony Community Association, Planned Community Developers
and Fluor Corporation.

National day of prayer held across fort bend county. Fort Bend County believers gathered to pray on the city hall and court house
steps in five locations as part of National Day of Prayer across America.
More than 40 churches including Protestant, Catholic and Messianic Jewish were
involved in bringing over 1,200 people to pray for the nation. In addition,
many churches opened their sanctuaries and chapels to prayer all day, and
churches and businesses posted signs outside and posters inside in the weeks
preceding the National Day of Prayer.
Bowling Tournament
successfully raises money for drug-free youth programs. The Fort Bend Regional Council on Substance Abuse held its fifth annual Fort Bend
Corporate Challenge bowling tournament to raise money for drug-free youth
programs.
The funds raised will support Summer Explosion Youth Leadership Camp, October’s Red Ribbon Week activities that are focused on drug prevention and many other
programs the council provides in the community.
Schlumberger’s Drilling Aces team, Chris George, Marvin Eason, James Leong and Bill Robertson, captured the victory for a record fourth consecutive year. They were presented
with the traveling Crystal Cup. Schlumberger is a long time sponsor of the
tournament and supporter of the FBRC.

FBJSL Introduces 2009-10 Board of Directors. The Fort Bend Junior Service League introduced its 2009-10 Board of Directors
who were installed at the May 5 membership meeting.
With approximately 250 members, FBJSL donated more than 21,100 volunteer hours
to the Fort Bend community this past year through its fundraising, direct
service and mentoring projects.
Since 2001, FBJSL has raised nearly $1.3 million for Fort Bend charities.
FBJSL will host an informational meeting on July 23 from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. at Sweetwater Country Club in Sugar Land for any
ladies between the ages of 23-49 who are interested in learning more about the
league.

Rose-Rich Area Chamber Annual Golf Classic Winners. The 2009 Rosenberg-Richmond Area Chamber Golf Classic was a huge success with
136 players and 34 teams. The Rosenberg-Richmond Auto Mile reclaimed the
position of title sponsor for 2009 as well as 2010. The group of title sponsors
included Finnegan Auto Group, Fort Bend Toyota, Gillman Honda-Mazda-Nissan, and
Legacy Ford-Lincoln-Mercury. The event was also sponsored in part by Silver
Eagle Distributors.
The first-place winner of the tournament was OakBend Medical Center with a gross
score of 53. Team members were
Ron McCann, Kam Praytor, John Perry and Jim Feuerbach. Van De Wiele Engineering secured second place with a score of 54. Players were Jeff Wiley, John Van De Wiele, Rudy Stegall and Brett Molgren.
The Closest to the Pin winner was Carolyn Parker of Longhorn Excavators, and the Longest Drive winner was Pete Ballis of Milano Custom Homes. The Drive for Dough game sent four lucky golfers home
with a thicker wallet. Winners were
Mike Dinges, Founders Bank, $1,000; Frank Lemkowitz, TXCO Resources, $500; John Van De Wiele, Van De Wiele Engineering, $500; and Steve Onstad, The Swinging Door, $500.
