Free Citizenship Classes at literacy council, wednesdays
Free citizenship classes are in session at the Literacy Council of Fort Bend
County. Classes are ongoing and conducted each Wednesday evening from 6 p.m.-8
p.m. at the Literacy Council Center, 12530 Emily Court, Sugar Land. Students
may join at any time.

Have a heart exhibit, during january and february
In recognition of American Heart Month in February, Fort Bend County Libraries’ Sugar Land Branch, 550 Eldridge Road, will exhibit a collection of resources on
heart health. The Have a Heart exhibit will be on display throughout the months of January and February.
The library has a number of books and electronic journals that will provide
insight into this life-threatening illness.

Saturday with the Master Gardeners, jan. 3
Visit four acres of Demonstration Gardens and talk to the volunteers who design
and maintain them. The volunteers are Fort Bend Master Gardeners sponsored by
Texas AgriLife Extension Service. It’s a great way to learn. Park in front of the Agriculture Center, located at 1402
Band Road, Rosenberg. Take one of the sidewalks to the area behind the building
to find the Master Gardeners. Gardens are open from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. Call

LOPEZ MEXICAN RESTAURANT SUPPORTS KEMPNER PRO GRAD, jan. 5
Support Kempner ProGrad by dining at Lopez Mexican Restaurant on the first
Monday of each month. Tell the waiter that you want to support Kempner Pro Grad
2009 and a portion of the proceeds will be given to the school. Other dates to
support Kempner ProGrad are Feb. 2, March 2, April 6, May 4 and June 1.
making music magic class, beginning jan. 6
Young boys can take a magical journey through music. Music Magic, an enrichment
program presented by the Fort Bend Boys Choir of Texas, is for 6- and
7-year-old boys who like music and singing and want to learn more. This
eight-week program brings music alive through the use of movement, singing,
musical games and other child-centered activities. Boys develop better large
muscle coordination, pitch matching, increased focus, rhythm awareness and
musicianship. Music Magic boys show off their newfound talents in a
mini-concert for family during the last class.
Music Magic will be on Tuesday evenings at the First United Methodist Church of
Sugar Land, 431 Eldridge Rd., from 6:30 p.m.-7:15 p.m. beginning Jan. 13 and
concluding on March 3. The cost for the course is only $70 and no auditions are
required. Boys will receive a free Music Magic T-shirt after classes start.

cirque imagination presents montage JAN 7
Cirque Imagination presents Montage at the Stafford Center Performing Arts Theatre from Jan. 7-11.
It is a grand show of circus daring and skill, starring former members of Cirque
du Soleil’s Mystere, O, Sultimbanco, Alegria and Quidam. This production aims to defy the
perception of what is possible, fusing strength, flexibility and technical
skill, fostering an appreciation for the beauty and capabilities of the human
body.

Green Thumb Seminar: Plant Propagation, Jan. 8
The Fort Bend Master Gardeners, sponsored by Texas AgriLife Extension Service,
will present Plant Propagation as the January program in the Green Thumb Series on Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Bud
O'Shieles Community Center, 1330 Band Road, Rosenberg.
Learn about creating more plants for your landscape or to share with others;
starting new plants using seeds, cuttings and layering techniques. The seminar
is free to all; no pre-registration required.

autism play group, jan. 10
The Autism Play Group of Fort Bend County will meet on Jan. 10 from 10 a.m.-noon
at Sugar Land City Park, 225 Seventh St. in Sugar Land. This group provides social opportunities for children between the ages of 1-12
with autism and their families. The group meets the second Saturday of every
month. The cost is free, but donations are appreciated.

literacy tutor training, jan 10, 17
Tutor training dates for the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County have been
scheduled for Saturdays, Jan. 10 and Jan. 17, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. both days at
the Literacy Center, located at 12530 Emily Court in Sugar Land.
LCFBC volunteer tutors teach adult basic literacy and/or English as a Second
Language (ESL). Students will benefit from the individualized attention while
tutors will enjoy the rewards of helping improve adult literacy. Please
volunteer and make an important difference in someone’s life during the new year. Literacy tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign
language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. The most important
requirement is that volunteers be committed to helping adults change their
lives by improving their ability to read, comprehend and speak the English
language.
Tutor-training workshops are held every other month, and attendance at all
scheduled days of training is required in order to become a certified tutor.

pete havel to speak at governmental relations meeting, jan. 12
Executive Director of the United States Chamber of Commerce, Pete Havel, will
speak at the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce at the Governmental Relations
Meeting on Jan. 12. The luncheon, hosted by Group 1 Automotive, will be held at
the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce, located at 445 Commerce Green Blvd. from
11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

Slpd citizens police academy JAN 8
Want to discover firsthand what it takes to be a police officer, get to know
your beat officer and learn more about criminal investigation? Find out by
signing up for the Sugar Land Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy.
The 13-week course begins Jan. 8, with students meeting once a week from 7
p.m.-10 p.m. Learn about the challenges faced by police officers, laws
affecting citizens, the judicial system and emergency management. Participants
personally interact with officers, detectives and other personnel in a
nontraditional law enforcement setting.
The training program consists of classroom and hands-on instruction designed to
provide interested Sugar Land citizens with a working knowledge of the Sugar
Land Police Department, its personnel and emergency management operations.
Everything needed for the 13-week course is supplied free-of-charge.

tri-city women’s club, JAN. 13
The next meeting of Tri-City Women’s Club is Jan. 13 at Sweetwater Country Club beginning at 10:30 a.m. The
entertainment is Bingo—the annual fundraiser with proceeds going to various charities to be determined.
Toys collected in December went to Child Advocates of Fort Bend County.
