On Nov. 24, 2009, the family of Lawrence E. Elkins presented Elkins High School Principal Barbara Whitaker with Legacy Memorial Panels in honor of Elkins who was the superintendent of Fort Bend ISD from 1974-84.
“The panels,” said his daughter, Lee Elkins Le Grand, “are the culmination of hours of looking through old family photos, talking with my brother Larry, verifying dates through newspaper articles and even my dad ’s resume. Our friend, Mike Dean, took the actual photos and worked some magic on them by making them all sepia, as well as evening their tone. ” She added, “I scripted a very rough draft of the text, and the photos that best illustrated that story were then used. As the final draft became more polished, I then asked a group of friends and colleagues to review the project and send suggestions and comments. ”
Le Grand thanked everyone for their invaluable input, and her husband, John, for the “incredible mounting,” on the panels.
In her remarks, Elkins’ daughter said the family hoped that those who were part of the Elkins community would read their dad ’s story. “From his life that was amazingly extraordinary in its ordinariness, we hope that this display will serve as a source of inspiration to everyone who enters. Maybe some will find a source of connection to his simple beginnings. Others might identify with his love of sports. To many, his service to his country through the military will be a link. ” She continued, “Still others will share his deep conviction that public education is for every child and that through untiring service to the larger community, life takes on an added dimension. ”
