Just offside the kitchen, a butler’s pantry provides a working station for parties, outfitted with another
refrigerator, dishwasher and other amenities. The breakfast room is charming
with half-curtains in a bird and flower print. Birdcage Windsor chairs combine
with an old pine table for an informal gathering space.
The house is well thought-out with private spaces far removed from others. The
master bedroom can be found down a hallway off the living room at the far left
end of the home, while guest quarters inhabit the opposite end of the home,
along with the utility room, pool bath and Becky
’s home office.
An informal staircase off the kitchen leads to an upstairs, multiple-use area.
An exercise room meets the landing at the top of the stairs. Guest bedrooms and
bathrooms utilized by grandchildren shoot off of this long corridor with a
large gameroom as the final destination at the end. Here, all sorts of family
fun take place with a pool table to one side and comfortable seating for movie
viewing anchoring the other.
And the house is abundant in outdoor charm, too, with a slate-covered gazebo,
balcony and porch overlooking a sweep of limestone that borders a pool by Texas
Pools.
Indeed it appears the Hubers thought of everything, including a built-in,
50-kilowatt whole-house generator for emergencies. They tested it out during
Hurricane Ike, as did some of their friends and neighbors.
“We were refuge for relatives and friends who wanted to come over and just relax,
cool off, take a nice shower and watch a little TV,
” recalls Dick. “I felt like Noah when we were putting it in. People would say, ‘What are you doing that for?’ But once we had that storm, people understood. I guess Noah is pretty
appropriate as long as you spell it NOAA,
” he says, referring to the NOAA National Weather Service.
Even this home’s storm shutters are truly operable, not just for show. “We like the way they look, too,” says Becky, who has found her traditional home, once again. This time, closer
to some of the grandkids.
“That’s a real perk,” she says. “It has worked out well for us.”l
