Scouts Make a Difference to Hurricane Victims - Cub Scout Pack 38 and 616, Boy Scout Troops 38 and 616 and several Girl Scout
Troops from New Territory worked hard to make a difference in the lives of
Hurricane IKE victims.
The group took on a service project to collect food for Fort Bend County victims
of Hurricane Ike by canvassing the neighborhoods in New Territory with flyers
informing people about the food drive. The next day, they collected the
items that neighbors left outside. All of these items were collected at Parkway
United Methodist Church by the Boy Scouts. The Scouts also received assistance
from the Sathya Sai religious organization with donations collected at the
church.
Two organizations benefited from the drive, Saint Theresa’s Food Bank in Sugar Land and Second Mile Mission Center in Stafford. Each
received approximately half of an estimated 12-14 truck bed loads of donated
items.

said, “The effort was pulled together on short notice and through the efforts of the
youth Scout members and adult leaders the event was a tremendous success.
Through the generosity of New Territory residents the quantity of donations was
enormous.
”
The Girl Scouts from Rainbow Stars Service Unit helped out a shelter in New
Territory. Parkway United Methodist church provided short-term shelter for
families in conjunction with Second Mile Mission. At the shelter, the girls
played with the younger children, helped sanitize the toys and play areas,
cleaned bathrooms and helped prepare the meals.
The scouts of Troop 616 organized and assisted the shelter with the preparation
and serving of meals for the Red Cross Shelter located at First UMC Sugar Land.
The scouts assisted the ministry at this church with the preparation, serving
and clean-up during the breakfast shift.

St. Laurence Families Gather for a Movie Under the Stars - St. Laurence families gathered on the lawn of St. Laurence School to enjoy the
first annual Movie Under the Stars.
The PTO sponsored a showing of Evan Almighty. Only six days prior to this event, Hurricane Ike made its way to the area, but it was decided by mid-week that the
show must go on. It was a welcome break from a stressful week and even the
children could sense the peace as families gathered on blankets, chairs and
even air beds to enjoy the evening. The weather was perfect and the spirit of
the evening was certainly one of a community that had become closer after a
week of uncertainty and confusion.
The movie seemed especially appropriate after Hurricane Ike and served as a
reminder that we must always follow God
’s will, especially when things do not make sense to us.
The National Junior Honor Society, Leo Club and St. Laurence athletic department
sold popcorn, candy and spirit items.
Renee Mock and Kristin Holy were the women responsible for coordinating the event.
