Lamar CISD’s Project L.E.A.R.N. Program Receives Statewide Recognition - Texas School Business magazine has named Lamar CISD’s Project L.E.A.R.N. initiative as one of 12 programs to be honored in the
magazine’s second annual Bragging Rights special issue.
Bragging Rights recognizes school districts that have implemented programs that
better the lives of students, schools and communities.
Project L.E.A.R.N. (Let’s Eliminate At-Risk Needs) is Lamar CISD’s family literacy program. The program offers adult basic education, GED and English as a Second Language
for parents. Children receive homework assistance, pre-kindergarten or
kindergarten instruction, or developmental child care. Parents learn valuable
job skills, while becoming more involved in their children’s education.
Paula Bauer, director of Project L.E.A.R.N., said, “I like to preach 'Break the cycle … teach the parent, reach the child,’ and I think we’ve been successful at doing that. It’s wonderful for the program to get some recognition. It might be my picture in
the magazine, but there was so much hard work done by so many people before I
got here. It’s the program itself that is making a difference, not just one person.”
“We were impressed by Lamar CISD’s foresight to factor parental involvement and success into the equation when
addressing the needs of
at-risk students,” says Texas School Business editor Katie Ford. “Program L.E.A.R.N. is a model program, and we’re proud to highlight it as an example of excellence in Texas public education.”
