Fort Bend Habitat for Humanity celebrated the construction of its 50th home at a
dedication ceremony at 735 Habitat Lane in Rosenberg. The new homeowners, Nune
and Rosie Martinez together with their six children, thanked all those who
worked so hard to help them make their dream of owning a home come true.
The children, ranging in age from 3 to 16 years said how excited they were to
finally have a home of their own and how much easier it will be to get ready
for school now that the family has two bathrooms instead of just one. Rosie is
delighted to be moving into a home just two blocks from where she grew up and
where some of her family stills lives.
The home was sponsored by St. Laurence Catholic Church in First Colony, whose
volunteers worked 10 Saturdays to complete the construction of the home. Jerry
Kazmierczak, representing St. Laurence, thanked volunteers for the efforts in
completing this home.
|
This is the fifth home the St. Lawrence parish has completed in partnership with
Fort Bend Habitat.
After explaining that the Martinez family had performed over 300 sweat equity
hours working on their home and the homes of others as a requirement for
becoming Habitat homeowners, Pat Odom, chairman of the Fort Bend Habitat family
selection committee, presented the family with a Bible and welcomed them to
their new home.
Paul Fontenot, current president of the Fort Bend Habitat board of directors,
noted that since the establishment of Fort Bend Habitat in 1992, the
organization has grown from building one home per year to six homes per year.
Fontenot also said that Fort Bend Habitat has been able to build 47 homes in
Honduras as a result of a tithe program.
These homes have gone to restore Honduras after the devastation of Hurricane
Mitch in 1998. Tom MacDougall,
|
past president of the board, who has participated in building 47 of the 50
homes, thanked the entire community for their support over the last 17 years.
Through donations of money, materials and volunteer labor from St. Laurence,
Fort Bend Habitat was able to build the home and sell it to the Martinez family
at an affordable price. The Martinez family will purchase the home with a
no-profit loan and their monthly mortgage payments will be used to build more
Habitat homes.
This home also marks the completion of Habitat Village, a three-year project of
18 Habitat homes on Habitat Lane, in Rosenberg. Fort Bend Habitat will begin
construction on its 51st home in Richmond in September.
