Community Leaders Work Toward City Vision
More than 70 community leaders participated in a Community Summit where work
groups refined City Council
’s draft Vision 2025, a document that will serve as an update to Sugar Land’s Comprehensive Plan.
“The large turnout at the summit proved what many already know,” said Mayor James Thompson, who participated in the summit. “Sugar Land residents take great pride in their community and the fact that the
city continues to have a strong reputation as a state, regional and national
leader.
”
Summit participants included members of city boards and commissions and other
community leaders identified by city council. Selection was based on factors
that matched the city
’s demographics, including diversity, geographic distribution, participation in
homeowner association groups, etc.
Activities were led by a professional consultant specializing in team building,
strategic planning and goal setting for local governments. City staff served as
facilitators for individual work groups that generated input through several
activities.
In addition, each group reviewed the guiding principles of the proposed Vision
2025. The document was drafted by City Council during a March 2009 work
session; it includes goals such as safe community, superior mobility,
outstanding cultural arts, educational and recreational opportunities and
regional business center of excellence.
At the close of the summit, participants listed methods to transform Vision 2025
into reality.
The suggested actions, along with Summit input, will be utilized by City Council
to finalize Vision 2025, which is scheduled to be reviewed and adopted in
August.
Additional opportunities for public input will occur as the city works to
formally amend the Comprehensive Plan during the fall. Updates and
announcements about Vision 2025 will be posted at
