MASTER SUITE/BATHROOMS
1st Place Master Suite/Bathrooms
The Winds of Change by Scott & Sandra Gjesdahl;
Bristol Design and Const.
During a severe windstorm, a large fir tree fell on the master suite wing of the
client
’s home. Necessity provided an opportunity to recreate. An outdated 1980s master
suite was reshaped and updated. Matching wardrobes were installed with custom
storage systems using VG Fir with Jatoba accents. Delineating the closet and
vanity areas are unique dresser/vanities that float above cantilevered curved
bench seats.
Honed green slate for the countertops help achieve an outdoor ambience, while
mirrors that function from both sides float between the counter and ceiling.
There are apothecary-style medicine cabinet drawers on either side of the sink
for convenient storage. The open shower is detailed with vertical handmade
mosaic and porcelain tiles, contrasting with the organic pebble shower floor.
The colors and materials selected
—including slate, pebbles, handmade ceramic tiles, and glass—helped bring a feeling of the outdoors into this comfortable space, a fitting
tribute to an untimely partial demolition by nature.

In a 1950s-era St. Louis high-rise, this previous maid’s bedroom and bath, was transformed along with other nearby room including a
small master bedroom, hallway closets and minimal bath. With a gorgeous view
through the window, the client wanted the view inside to match. All of the
dividing walls and closets were removed, creating a new bathing area encircled
with built-in wardrobe closets. In addition, a packing island counter, double
concrete trough sinks and a deep aromatherapy tub placed on a wood pedestal add
function and grace to the once small and disjointed cluster of rooms.
A palette of neutral colors for wardrobe and linen cabinetry, along with
variegated slate flooring and shower walls, allow the homeowner to change the
wall colors in years to come. The lovely focal point that directs easy traffic
flow is the generously-scaled, double-sided Wenge wood island with a limestone
top. An outdated space is now an updated suite with a view.
